Dear Parents/Guardians,

During the next few weeks, our NISD second graders will be embarking on a new challenge while learning about the principles of balance and motion. We will be using some kit based lessons to observe and compare how objects balance, spin, and roll. Using the scientific method, we will communicate the things we discover, orally and in writing. As an extension of this learning, our students will apply their new knowledge using the principles of Problem Based Learning (PBL) to find a solution to the following problem: How can we, as fitness engineers, design a field day activity that utilizes force, balance, and motion to enhance our fun and fitness?

The students will be working in small groups in class while collaborating with our PE teachers who will act as our project experts. The students will create a plan, make a prototype of their activity, and present their ideas to their peers. They will be designing a new field day activity, and who knows, Coach may want to use it this year! J It will be expected that they create a design on paper, a model, and ruled to teach how to play their game or do the activity.

This opportunity for your child to participate in a science/engineering project that has an authentic purpose is very important to enhance their 21st Century learning, research, design, and presentation skills. As parents/guardians, we ask that you support your students’ ideas while letting them be the leaders in their designs. Although we ask that nothing be purchased for this project, the students will need to be creative in re-purposing items that will help them with their plan. Therefore, any items that you may want to donate to our class that would help with the project would be greatly appreciated. A sample list of items is below. Also, if your child wants to bring something that is unique from your house (ie. their brother’s favorite pair of roller blades), please write me a quick note to let me know it is OK that they use it in their project. Also, please let me know if the item needs to be returned after their presentation.

Thank you so much for supporting our learning. If you have any questions or would like to lend a helping hand during our planning and construction phases, please let me know.

Suggested items to support our learning:

String or yarn

Paper plates

Cardboard

Swim noodles

Small buckets

Tape (masking, duct, Scotch)

Wide craft sticks

Plastic cups

Balls of any kind

Toys/objects that roll

Toys/objects that spin

Tissue tubes

Paper towel tubes

Pipe insulation tubes

Shoe or tissue boxes

Straws

They will come home with a list of materials they need as well around Tuesday of next week.

Have a great weekend! J

Sincerely,
Second  Grade Teachers
